The issue of Trust with your staff

Sep 1, 2009

Hi Greg:

In response to your question the whole thing revolves around "trust". Following is my take on it:

Back when I was a rookie Department Manager 30 years ago, my staff use to complain that they do not trust me. While still leaning the ropes I learnt and practiced some rules that have been helping me till todate. They are:

1. Generate trust
2. Do not lie- give the correct status and problems( if any) update
3. Be proactive to support your team
4. Do a frequent Group meeting and peiodic 1:1 meetings
5. Do positive performance reinforcements

I would love to tell you a lot more if you just let me know.

New Trends in Project Management

I am noticing that more and more conferences are asking the call for papers to cover the Socio-Economic and Socio-Political aspects of Project Management. Hence motivated by this research trend which can also be addressed by the practitioners I have sent an abstract:

This paper is concerned about explaining our findings on linking projects to the broader organization goals. The projects were not started as social experiments but it was learnt that unless you took care of the social issues other problems will develop. Here we report our experiment and findings, as reported in the book “ Technology Scorecards- Aligning IT Investments with Business Performance”, what needs to be done to take care of the social issues in the chapter “ Human Factors”. All aspects are examined and presented in light of what worked and what did not in major global projects with multiple stake holders. Three areas of human factors were of particular impact as they were concerned with the Project Management, Project Champions and Business Case Development and were found to be the corner stones of socio-political and social-economic areas of the projects. Discussing all three of them will be far beyond the scope of this paper so this paper will be limited to addressing the Project Champions alone.

If this arouses some curiosity on your part please contact me. I will be happy to engage with you.

I wrote the following comments to Peter on the forgotten issues of Data Integration.

Hi Peter:

Read with interest about data integartion. I am sure you know a few other aspects of data integration such as: 1. Risks & Security of Data 2. Back Ups Coming from the back ground of mission critical applications these topics have been of great importance even more than the ones you mention. True without consideration you mention you do not ave an IT/ITES system yet if you have a system and it is mission critical, then without my considerations its integrity becomes questionable. Then in todays day and time security of the integrated data against the malicous thieves becomes more important then they were in yesteryears. Thanks and have a great day.

Good Book - a Bit Redundant, August 22, 2009
By
Carlos Borges - This book is worth buying - but a bit dull in the beginning. A lot of the information in the book related to SAP (and the ASAP methodology). There are many pages with definitions of terms that can be used as a reference, but again many are related to SAP. Overall, worth buying if your are an IT PM (or are thinjing of being one) and want to learn methods of tying in projects to business value.

VERY PRACTICAL BOOK, August 16, 2009
By
Hari M. Gupta (Alta Loma, CA) - I found this book to be very practical. It satisfies needs of all people involved with technology management - the students, the teachers, the CEOs, the managers, the writers, the analysts, and anybody else involved in the management of technology. The cover design in very appealing and the title is most appropriate for the contents. Dr. Bansal has done an excellent job of marrying the theory and practical aspects of technology management by utilizing his own personal experiences as a "binder." He is right on the money about taking advantage of Program Management Offices (PMOs) to manage technological projects by properly overseeing the PMOs themselves. Speaking with my own experience, some units of Department of Defense have successfully managed complex weapon system programs involving very advance technologies by utilizing PMOs. However to do so, as Dr. Bansal says in his book, they had to conduct periodic Management Reviews of the PMOs. The net results was, again as Dr. Bansal points out in his book, the projects were completed on schedule and with in the allocated funding. Most of the literature on technology management usually is heavy on technical aspects and very shallow on human factors. It appears Dr. Bansal recognized that and has done an excellent job of giving adequate emphasis on human factor. His detailed description of human factor contributions goes a long way to fill the gap that has been left unfilled for a long time. Kudos, Dr. Bansal. This book is very suitable to become a text book for teaching management of technology in colleges, industry training programs, and hand-book for CEOs and technology managers.

Technology Scorecards: Aligning IT Investments with Business Performance, July 30, 2009
By
Suresh N. Mehta "snm4sap" (Carlsbad, CA USA) - Dr. Sam Bansal's book flows nicely in explaining complex topics such as product life cycle management, business case development, supply chain execution & management, strategic enterprise management, business balanced scorecards, and human factors. Dr. Bansal's years of business experience, in a variety of industries, describes how to align IT software investments and tie it to the performance of an enterprise. The book covers from very simple business issues to very complex enterprise management issues. This book is great for senior-level managers to junior managers, IT technical staff, and technical consultants. I can not wait to read his follow-on books in the future. Great job, Dr. Bansal!

Art of IT Project Management, July 28, 2009
By
Sanjay Jain (Oak Hill, VA United States) - Project Management is part art and part science. The science is captured well in the texts and guidebooks but few of them cover the art. Sam Bansal has developed his art of project management over four decades of experience of delivering successful IT implementation projects. He has distilled the art in this book succinctly covering the multiple aspects that a project manager needs to pay attention to. This book is valuable for those interested in delivering the promise of IT projects. Industry project managers need this knowledge to improve the notorious failure records of IT implementation projects.

Thechnology Scorcards, July 24, 2009
By
Atma Advani "HVAC-R Project Manager" (USA) - I found this book absolutely fascinating. I loved the way an experienced author Dr.Sam Bansal was able to establish Scorecard Methodology to estimate and exploit the benefits of technology to improve the business performance, classical project management not only for IT industry but very good for any Project Manager. Author's perspective is cost and benefits, functionality and benefits planning and execution. It seems it goes way beyond classical project management of schedules and line diagrams and Microsoft project and goes into the often-ignored topics of human factors that can be make or break the projects. For strategy alignment with business performance and upfront planning for execution this is a rare book I have come across. There is a message in this book and that is the definition and category of this work is within the domain of Strategy, Investment Alignment, Business Performance and related issues of Planning and Execution.

Technology Scorecards - IT/Business Interface, July 18, 2009
By
Julian P. Kaye - Technology Scorecards is a book with a wealth of knowledge on the theme of its subtitle, Aligning IT Investments with Business Performance. Dr. Sam Bansal begins his book by evaluating the reasons why many IT projects fail. Common problems relate to poor communications between the IT specialists, such as vendors and consultants, and client company executives and other stakeholders. Sam cites surveys, including his own, that clearly show that IT failures are very expensive in time and money. Sam Bansal demonstrates the importance of effective use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the creation of Scorecards geared towards the business goals of the enterprise. This he does by means of established models, proven software tools, and by drawing on his long career experience that he illustrates with a number of case histories. Scorecard methodology is shown to be applicable to Strategic Enterprise Management, Supply Chain Management and Product Life Cycle Management. The final part of the book describes its successful implementation to deliver on the promise of a significant return on IT investments including attention to important human factors that can often make or break a major project.

Sarita Mittal "Rita" (La Jolla, Ca) - The cover stands out among all others at Amazon. The topics covered are fairly exhaustive from planning and execution view point of enterprise software projects. If I take the data, tables and case studies out of this book the rest can stand on its own for " Investment Alignment for Business Performance Improvement", for any business. Was it accidental or the author was deliberate about it? At any rate it was a good book to read. I found it to be a nice mixture of business and technology. The case studies were quite interesting.

Technology Scorecard, May 18, 2009
By
Amrish Goel "Amrish" (San Diego) - I found the title very descriptive and innovative. This book is based on real life experience of Sam Bansal of doing large global projects. It is systematically laid down. First he describes the motivation to write this book and then the business drivers and resulting benefits of selected and important enterprise technologies are given. This leads to the business case based on the selected technologies. Then the scorecard methodology is described to develop the strategy in synch with corporate goals. Rest of the book takes you through detailed steps required to take the projects through successful completion. IT is aimed at delivering as per the Key Performance Indicators of the business. Strategy development and execution is covered in 4 chapters and a total of 16 sub chapters, covering all aspects of planning and execution. It seems to change the paradigm of projects from being ITcentric to business centric. Meaning there by the technology metrics of success become subordinate to the metrics of business optimization.

Technology Scorecard, May 4, 2009
By
Sam Bansal "Sam" (La Jolla, Ca USA) - This book is based on real life experience of the author of doing global projects with multiple stake holders. It is systematically laid down. First the author's motivation to write this book is described and then the business drivers and resulting benefits of selected and important enterprise technologies are given. This leads to the estimation of business values of the subject technologies. Then the scorecard methodology is described to develop the strategy in synch with corporate goals. Rest of the book takes you through detailed steps required to take the projects through successful completion, delivering as per the KPIs of business, established during the strategy phase. Strategy development and execution is covered in 4 chapters and a total of 16 sub chapters, covering all aspects of planning and execution. In the opinions of one of the CEOs of a very large Semi Conductor company "Sam, I will get a copy and read it. The title still carries a unique message, tieing IT to business performance. These two are hardly ever used in the same sentence. IT is always looked upon as a must have for almost every reason except business performance". Good luck with the book. My response to him is not only the title but the book changes the paradigm of Projects. As it dles not talk about doing the Project Management based on the old IT matrics but on the matrics of the business value. And the above CEO feels that it has never been done before. I would be interested in your feedback.

Sam
